About the Hall
History, heritage, and our place in the Masonic community
Our History
Dunston Freemasons Hall stands as a landmark of continuity and tradition in the local area. The building has been at the heart of Freemasonry in Dunston for well over a century, providing a permanent and dignified home for lodges that meet under the United Grand Lodge of England.
Originally established to serve the growing Masonic community of the region, the Hall has been extended and modernised over the years while preserving its character and sense of history. Many generations of Freemasons have passed through its doors, and it remains a place where Brotherhood, charity, and self-improvement are practised and celebrated.
The Building
The Hall comprises a Temple (main lodge room) for ceremonies only, a separate dining and social area, and supporting facilities. The architecture and interior decoration reflect the solemnity and symbolism of Freemasonry, with columns, compass and square motifs, and traditional colour schemes that create an atmosphere conducive to reflection and fellowship.
Careful stewardship has ensured that the building meets modern standards of accessibility and safety whilst retaining its historic appeal. We are proud to maintain this asset for the benefit of our lodges and the wider community.
Role in the Community
Dunston Freemasons Hall is more than a meeting place for lodges. It serves as a hub for Masonic activity in the area, hosting rehearsals, lectures, and social events. The Hall is also available for hire by outside organisations, helping to strengthen links with the local community and ensure the building continues to play a vital role in Dunston’s civic life.
